Safety Gear Basics : Getting Ready to go on track
- By Chad
All About Safety:
Minimum Safety Gear Required for Drifting
Typically at most events, the minimum safety gear required to go on track at a drift event is a handheld fire extinguisher and a SA2015 or newer helmet. We always recommend to review the track rules prior to registering for the event in case there are further requirements necessary.
Why a Fire Extinguisher is Essential
A fire extinguisher is essential because it can help you to put out a fire in your car if you have an accident. Drifting is a high-speed activity, and there is always the potential for a fire to start if you have an accident. A fire extinguisher can help you to put out the fire or at least minimize the damage before a rescue team can arrive.
Common Fire extinguisher Types:
Why an SA2015 or Newer Helmet is Essential
An SA2015 or newer helmet is essential because it provides better protection for your head in the event of an accident. SA helmets are designed to withstand the high forces that are generated in a car accident. They are also made of stronger materials that can help to protect your head from impact.
Why a DOT or Motorcycle Helmet is Not Enough
DOT and motorcycle helmets are not designed for the high forces that are generated in a car accident. They are also made of weaker materials that are not as effective at protecting your head from impact. SA Helmets also carry a fire rating, where Motorcycle helmets do not. As a result, it is important to wear an SA2015 or newer helmet when you are drifting.
Other Beneficial Gear
While not always required, a bucket seat and racing steering wheel can also be beneficial for drifting. These items can help you to feel more comfortable and secure in your car, and they can also help you to control your car more easily. Certified seats also are developed with flame retardant material, to keep you safe in the event of a fire.
